Casio’s JS-40B Calculator
In Korea, most people preparing for the CPA or tax accountant exams reportedly use an electronic calculator made by Casio called the JS-40B. I’ve never prepared for the CPA exam myself, but I know about it because a friend of mine who is preparing for the exam told me about it. Calculators with complex features like scientific calculators can’t be used in the exam room, and since the JS-40B is also widely preferred among practitioners, it seems to be used a lot. It appears to be such a beloved product that large accounting firms even give it as a welcome gift to new employees.
A Friend’s Dilemma
I once heard this story from my friend who is preparing for the CPA exam. “I went to the library to study for the exam, but I realized I’d left my calculator at home. Going back home would be a waste of time, and using the basic calculator on my phone instead wouldn’t feel natural to use and seemed like it would get in the way of my exam-solving practice.” When I heard this, a thought came to me. It would be great to recreate that calculator as closely as possible so that it could be used on a phone too. Since modern people may forget their calculator but never forget their phone, I figured a program like this would be helpful.
Of course, that idea stayed tucked away and forgotten deep in my mind, until one day I suddenly heard the words “CPA exam,” which brought the idea back to me, and that’s how I came to make this program.
Program Introduction: CLONE-40B
CLONE-40B is a program I created to replicate the features of the JS-40B as closely as possible. Since it’s built as a PWA (Progressive Web App), it can be used anywhere a browser is available—on smartphones, computers, and more—and it’s also possible to install it directly on a device as an app.
